Training course on malaria case management for resource persons and focal points

WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional training course on Malaria Case Management for Resource Persons and Focal Points. This training course is composed of 8 sessions and it was conducted virtually in 2020 by WHO EMRO in collaboration with the Global Malaria Programme, GMP at WHO Headquarters. The main aim of the training course was capacity building of three EMR countries which are Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. The objective of the training was to provide participants with the skills and competence to understand the basis of malaria diagnosis and treatment and present it, to plan and implement malaria case management services and understand antimalarial treatment policy formulation, using the WHO malaria treatment guidelines and case management training manuals.

Dr Andrea Bosman was the trainer of the course. Dr Andrea Bosman joined the WHO Malaria Unit in 1993, after working 10 years on malaria epidemiology and training at the Institute of Parasitology of Rome. In WHO he developed the protocol for therapeutic efficacy of antimalarials, pharmacovigilance protocols and safety reviews of multiple medicines and the inter-agency harmonization of ACT quality standards and led a 10-years agreement between WHO and Novartis to supply Coartem at cost price. He supported the multi-year community-based malaria program in Ethiopia, and integrated community case management at scale in 5 African countries. He produced many WHO guidance documents on malaria medicines and diagnostics, convening technical consultations, supporting country policy reviews and training.
