The Ministry of Health and the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) have made significant progress in reducing malaria incidence from 409 per 1,000 population in FY2016/17 to 321 per 1,000 population in FY2018/19. These achievements have been possible with visionary leadership and accountability which was enhanced by implementation of high impact preventive interventions of IRS and LLINs distribution as well as innovation such as community based interventions, access to community health insurance, and performance based funding.

The National Malaria Strategic Plan (NMSP) 2020-2024 articulates the interventions that will be put in place towards the improvement of the health status of Rwandans and the fight against poverty by reducing the significant socioeconomic burden due to malaria. The NMSP was developed through consultations with health service providers at all levels of the health care system, development partners, experts and draws on the lessons learned and recommendations from the Malaria Program Review (MPR) undertaken in October/November 2019.
