In 2017, the Ministry of Health of Peru (Ministerio de Salud –  MINSA) approved the elimination of malaria as a health policy, thereby prioritizing the fight against this disease politically and economically. Starting in 2018, the Malaria Elimination Plan, called the Zero Malaria Plan (Plan Malaria Cero – PMC), was implemented in the Loreto region, which reports more than 90% of all malaria cases in the country and 98% of P. malaria cases. falciparum. PMC, until 2020, has managed to reduce cases by 75% in the Loreto region and has prevented more than 80 thousand cases in this period, especially in populations originating from the Amazon, remote rural populations, and border populations. However, due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, there is a decrease in control activities, so the achievements of the PMC are threatened. Also, an increase in cases has been observed in the departments of Amazonas by P. falciparum and Junín, as well as the persistence of cases in 173 districts of the country in the years 2018-2020.

The purpose of the National Malaria Elimination Strategic Plan 2022 – 2030 called ‘Documento Técnico: Plan hacia la Eliminación de la Malaria en Perú 2022 – 2030’ is to contribute to the elimination of malaria in Peru, through the implementation of a community-focused Plan. The main objective of the plan is to implement activities for the elimination of malaria, with a community approach and reduce malaria cases by 90% in Peru in the period 2022-2030.
