Malaria Operational Research and Program Evaluation Priorities for the sub-Saharan Africa Region: Full Report

This report details a research prioritization process undertaken to develop a country-driven list of priority malaria operational research (OR) and program evaluation (PE) topics for the sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region. The prioritization process was undertaken by the PMI Insights Project in collaboration with the Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Senegal, and in partnership with the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and The Global Fund. Using a broad stakeholder consultation process to gather the perspectives and inputs of malaria experts from 26 countries in SSA, the process resulted in a prioritized list of 33 OR and PE topics. The topics reflect critical evidence gaps that are impeding many national malaria programs’ achievement of high coverage of malaria interventions and the effective deployment of new tools. The prioritized list of topics is intended to serve as a valuable resource to maximize the relevance and impact of OR and PE investments by galvanizing a coordinated effort among funding agencies, national malaria programs, and technical partners to fill critical evidence gaps identified by malaria-endemic country stakeholders.

This prioritized list of OR and PE topics complements the currently available malaria research agendas that are country specific or were developed at the global-level by bringing forward country-level perspectives on OR and PE topics that have broad relevance across malaria-endemic settings.
