Ifakara Masterclass Edition 4- Treating the Fabric: how early entomologists harnessed biology to revolutionize malaria control: A Masterclass with Prof. Pierre Carnevale.

Treating the Fabric: how early entomologists harnessed biology to revolutionize malaria control

The 5th edition of the masterclass hosted by Fredros Okumu from Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) Profs. Pierre Carnevale and Sylvie Manguin.

The conversation starts off with introduction to Malaria, the history of it and how medical entomology began. How 3 mosquitoes: the large black brindle, small black brindle and large brown brindle were examined in 1897 to find a crescent giving glagellum then four flagellum attacking one small leucocyte which led the discovery od malaria parasite causing the disease. Some studies were presented to demonstrate the protection offered by untreated mosquito nets. Then mosquito nets treated with permethrin and deltamethrin was talked about from a study by Hervy and Sales, 1980 which led to the very first Permethrin trial in BF entomological department in 1983. Pierre discusses the blood feeding behaviour of Anopheles gambie and Anopheles funestus and their mortality rates in Permethrin treated huts. Karankasso trial is discussed in detail. Following that the milestones in the impact of ITNs in malaria control is pointed out.
