The Big Malaria Questions
The 35th edition of the masterclass hosted by Fredros Okumu from Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) and Sheila Ogoma from Clinton Health Access Initiative(CHAI) features Prof. Kevin Marsh.
The importance of learning through the journey of malaria eradication from the past and using the lessons learned to further pursue malaria eradication is of utmost importance. The WHO’s Strategic Advisory Groups detailed report of its key findings and recommendations on Malaria Eradication is highlighted for a deeper insight.
Historical lessons on malaria eradication
- Account for the hardest places from the outset.
- Eradication cannot be promised too early; risk of donor and political fatigue.
- National strategies must be designed to fit the country context and retain flexibility.
- R & D critical until eradication is achieved and even beyond.
- Outcome will have profound implications for multiple diseases.
Malaria eradication can be achieved and should be pursued actively. It can be achieved by
- Software of eradication: Improving malaria program management and implementation; making better use of existing tools.
- Hardware of eradication: Rolling out new tools
- Greater financing: Increasing financial investment in malaria elimination and eradication efforts.
