Vectors of Asia, Africa & the Americas
The 28th edition of the masterclass hosted by Fredros Okumu from Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) and Sheila Ogoma from Clinton Health Access Initiative(CHAI) features Profs. Sylvie Manguin, Indra Vythilingam, Y. Rubio Palis and L. Koekemoer.
The discourse was set in motion by bringing onto the foreground the climatic and vector related complexities which impacts the approach taken for malaria control in different continents across the globe. It is stated that ¨Global variation in the stability of malaria transmission derives from interactions between climate and specific biological characteristics of certain dominant anopheline vectors¨. Historical lessons on progress and failures in malaria control and opportunities for improving malaria vector control in Africa, Asia and South America was highlighted in detail. Necessity for increased focus on medical entomology and molecular systematics to complement other malaria control measures to achieve malaria elimination also was discussed. Outdoor-biting, the influence of human behaviours and residual malaria transmission was briefly touched upon. Also, supplementary interventions for malaria control were explored together with the topics of simian Malarias in Asia and the Americas.
