Global malaria control and elimination: report of a technical review
This report presents a summary of the presentations, group work, plenary discussions and outcome of a meeting of experts convened in Geneva, Switzerland on 17–18 January 2008 to review:
- the definitions and terminology of malaria control, elimination and eradication;
- the feasibility of malaria elimination, in relation to the intensity of transmission and vectorial capacity.
Participants were also to make recommendations on:
- the feasibility of malaria eradication, given the tools available today and the epidemiology of malaria in various regions of the world; and
- the gaps in knowledge and priorities for research and development in the next phase of malaria control.
