2024 Africa Malaria Progress Report (ALMA)

Published: 15/09/2024

Malaria remains one of Africa’s most pressing public health challenges, accounting for 95% of global cases and 97% of global deaths in 2023, with children under five bearing the heaviest burden. While significant progress has been achieved since 2000—including the recent certification of Cabo Verde and Egypt as malaria-free—most African Union (AU) Member States are not on track to meet the 2030 elimination target. The continent faces a “perfect storm” of threats, including insufficient financing, climate change, humanitarian crises, and growing biological resistance, which jeopardize hard-won gains.

This progress report provides a comprehensive overview of Africa’s fight against malaria. It highlights the current status of malaria burden and progress toward AU and global targets, outlines the key threats that could derail elimination efforts, and sets out priority actions needed to accelerate progress. The report also showcases country-level innovations, regional collaborations, and opportunities to harness new tools, financing, and multisectoral action. It is both a call to action and a roadmap for leaders, policymakers, and partners to translate commitments into measurable impact and ensure Africa remains on course to end malaria by 2030.
