USAID Program for the Advancement of Malaria Outcomes (PAMO) Plus
Objectives
The main objectives of this projects are:
- Increase the capacity of health facilities and community health workers (CHWs) to improve the quality and accessibility of malaria case management and services;
- Increase the accessibility and quality of services to prevent malaria during pregnancy through early antenatal care(ANC) visits;
- Improve knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) toward proven malaria control behaviors, products, and services;
- Improve malaria surveillance data, including data from health facility and community levels, for effective, data-led decision-making; and
- Increase and expand the effectiveness of malaria control measures in districts targeted by PMI’s pre-elimination.
The 2021 World Malaria Report indicates that, globally, there were an estimated 14 million more malaria cases and 47,000 more deaths in 2020 compared to 2019 due to disruptions in services during the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation may have been far worse if not for the initiatives of malaria endemic countries, such as Zambia, to maintain services. The 2021 report emphasized that the present malaria situation calls for accelerated action to curb the resurgence of the disease, particularly in Africa.
To accelerate progress, the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) PAMO Plus Program, managed in conjunction with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), supports the Ministry of Health to reduce illness and death from malaria by improving the prevention, detection, and treatment of malaria in high-burden areas.
PAMO Plus works to increase access to quality malaria control interventions in Eastern, Luapula, Muchinga, and Northern Provinces through activities that aligns with Zambia’s National Malaria Elimination Strategic Plan and works closely with the Ministry of Health to strengthen malaria prevention, detection, and treatment in Zambia at the national, provincial, district, and community levels. This activity builds strong effective partnerships with communities, civil society, health facilities, District Health Offices, Provincial Medical Offices, the private sector, and other partners to scale up and institutionalize proven strategies to fight malaria.
