Tools to curb drug resistance in malaria parasites

Objectives

To identify antimalarial compounds to stem the spread of drug resistance.

Principal Investigators / Focal Persons

Rationale and Abstract

Drug resistance is a major challenge to controlling malaria. Resistant parasites emerge, spread geographically & eventually render our drugs useless. We have been on a treadmill of using, then losing, malaria drugs for decades. The study aims to identify antimalarial compounds to stem the spread of drug resistance by exploiting the fact that malaria must spread via mosquitoes. Drugs for which resistant parasites get trapped in the mosquito stopping them infecting new people & spreading resistance will be identified.
