The cross border project Regional Artemisinin Initiative 4 Elimination (RAI4E)
Objectives
The aim of this project is to contribute to the goal of malaria elimination of all species by 2025 as set out by the Royal Cambodian Government, by achieving transmission-interruption in the most remote, hard-to-reach forested areas and along the international Cambodian border.
Specific objectives are to :
- Reduce malaria transmission in forested and remote regions along the international border of northern Cambodia
- Improve access to and uptake of malaria preventive tools, diagnostic and treatment services, and health education for hard-to-reach populations
- Sustain strong surveillance and timely response in border areas and with cross-border partner collaboration aimed at malaria elimination and prevention of re-establishment

Mobile Malaria Workers (MMWs) are providing quality malaria services at mobile posts and during outreach activities along the remote and forested border areas with Laos PDR, Thailand, and Vietnam. Malaria infections are mainly detected in local forest goers, mobile & migrant populations, seasonal workers, soldiers, and their family members. These populations are most at-risk of malaria due to their highly mobile nature in the forest and across international borders, their limited access to and/or uptake of any malaria services and their exposure to malaria vectors. It is hard to reach these communities through passive case detection provided by health facilities and village-based malaria workers. Transmission is most common among adult males (>15 years); however, compared to the previous RAI2E funding cycle, an increase during RAI3E in the proportion of confirmed malaria cases among females and in ages younger than 15 years old has been observed in some districts.
