Study of Gymnopilus penetrans, a Walloon mushroom, as a source of promising anti-plasmodial metabolites

Objectives

This project will study Gymnopilus penetrans, a Walloon mushroom, as a source of promising anti-plasmodial metabolites.

Principal Institution

University of Liège, Belgium

Rationale and Abstract

Malaria is responsible for the death of more than 400,000 people annually, mostly young children. Resistance to current treatments makes it essential to identify new antimalarial drugs. Although fungi are little studied, they abound in potentially valuable compounds. This is why, based on preliminary results, this project focuses on this particular kingdom.
