Sahel Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (SMNTD)
Objectives
The objective of the Sahel Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (SMNTD) project for Africa is to increase access to and use of harmonized community-level services for the prevention and treatment of malaria and selected neglected tropical diseases in targeted cross-borders areas in participating countries in the Sahel region.
There are three components to the project, the first component being to improve regional collaboration for stronger results across participating countries. This component will support countries’ efforts to harmonize policies and procedures and engage in joint planning, implementation, knowledge exchange and evaluation of malaria and NTD service delivery. This component includes three sub-components: regional coordinating committee comprised of national program managers and supported by a technical advisory group (s) (TAG) will be established, regional research, and regional pooled drug procurement. The second component is the support coordinated implementation of technical strategies and interventions. This component will support countries’ efforts to jointly control malaria and NTDs through community-based interventions in cross-border areas. Finally, the third component is to strengthen institutional capacity to coordinate and monitor implementation. This component will provide support to country level implementing agencies and regional institutions to perform core functions and ensure that the project is well implemented, monitored and evaluated.
