The role of the neuro-immuno-mucosa-microbiota axis in controlling the inflammatory response and development of toxoplasmosis, Chagas disease and malaria
Objectives
*Original title in Portuguese: O papel do eixo neuro-imuno-mucosa-microbiota no controle da resposta inflamatória e desenvolvimento da toxoplasmose, doença de Chagas e malária
To characterize the potential immunomodulatory effects of a starch-coumarin-based compound against experimental infections by Toxoplasma gondii, Trypanosma cruzi and Plamodium berghei Anka, as well as to investigate the control mechanisms of these infections and pathogenesis associated with the neuro-immuno-mucosa-microbiota axis.
From the current scientific panel regarding the chemotherapies used for toxoplasmosis, Chagas disease and malaria, we assume that much remains to be explored in this area, due to the absence of vaccines and effective therapeutic actions in the treatment of these diseases. The need to (i) understand the development of pathogenesis associated with these infections and (ii) the search for new drugs that can act with the maximum effective action on the parasites and the minimum of side effects on the individual becomes more and more imminent.
