Prospection of secondary metabolites of Amazonian plant species active against Plasmodium falciparum
Objectives

This project proposes to use secondary metabolites isolated from plant species from the Amazon as potential inhibitors of P. falciparum. It is expected, at the end of the study, to generate scientific-technological knowledge about the bioprospecting and validation of plant species used as antimalarials by Amazonian peoples. This project also seeks to propose a mechanism of action of these molecules on P. falciparum and contribute to the construction and solidification of a bank of molecular targets, generating in the process a patentable molecule with potential pharmacological capacity
Malaria, a disease caused by infection with Plasmodium spp., has affected 228 million people worldwide. In Brazil, 157,453 cases were registered in 2019, with 99% of occurrence in the Brazilian Amazon. Pharmacological therapy against P. falciparum consists of using the drug artemisinin synergistically with another drug of different formulation. More recently, artemether-lumefantrine has been used as the gold standard in the treatment of severe malaria. However, the resistance of parasites to these drugs has reduced the options for fighting the disease over the years, making it necessary to develop new drug approaches. The study of medicinal plants, based on their use by different groups in society, provides valuable information for the preparation of pharmacological, phytochemical and agronomic studies on these plants, with great savings in time and money.
