PMI VectorLink Senegal
Objectives
The objectives of this project are to:
- Assist the NMCP in scaling up vector control interventions through Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) and insecticide-treated net (ITN) distribution;
- Implement IRS in targeted districts and monitor its effectiveness, maintaining high coverage levels (97.2% – 98.9%) in four health districts (Koungheul, Koumpentoum, Makacolibatang, and Kedougou);
- Perform IRS quality testing and entomological monitoring to ensure effective vector control;
- Procure equipment for the University of Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD) laboratories and insectary, and train UCAD entomologists on mobile data collection;
- Support the NMCP’s continuous distribution of ITNs and pilot social inclusion projects to distribute mosquito nets to children in koranic schools;
- Monitor the durability of pyrethroid and PBO insecticide-treated nets; and
- Enhance the technical capacity of the parasitology lab at UCAD for improved entomological research and surveillance.

Rationale and Abstract
Malaria is endemic throughout Senegal and the entire population is at risk. While the number of reported malaria cases has dropped in recent years, malaria is still a major cause of morbidity and mortality and a high priority for the government. Senegal has made significant progress against malaria and remains one of the leaders in piloting and scaling up new recommendations and strategies to increase the reach and effectiveness of interventions.
Activities and accomplishments:
- PMI VectorLink Senegal distributed ITNs nationwide through routine distribution channels (health facilities and community-based organizations) from 2020 to March 2023.
- The project constructed an insectary and established a modern entomology laboratory including the supply of all needed equipment at University Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD) in Dakar.
- PMI VectorLink Senegal distributed 7,312 ITNs to 237 Daaras in region of Thiès, reaching 14,524 Daaras residents including 12,187 Talibé children and 2,337 non-Talibé residents living in the Daaras.
