Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust COVID-19 Epidemic Preparedness
Objectives
The key goals are to provide diagnostic capability in Malawi for the COVID-19 epidemic and to develop clinical and epidemiological tools to manage epidemic disease in Malawi.
Aim One: Diagnostic Capability
- Complete CDC protocol validation, laboratory technician training, and external quality assurance for COVID-19 testing at MLW;
- Commence COVID-19 testing for suspect cases at Chileka International Airport (at Port Authority invitation) and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.;
- Develop a platform for genomic surveillance of COVID-19 and potential future outbreaks;
Aim Two: Clinical and Epidemiological Tools;
- Secondary care escalation plan was formalised, and a clinical data collection platform was established
- Data collection tools and established analysis plan to deliver epidemiological surveillance data to inform control strategies.
- Confirm terms of reference for effective inter-agency partnership with Malawian Ministry of Health (MoH) and Public Health Institute of Malawi (PHIM). This will include linkage into regional (African CDC) and international (WHO) surveillance networks.

Malawi is at high risk of COVID-19 epidemic spread, the healthcare system is fragile and the population is vulnerable to severe disease.
We propose epidemic preparedness activities for COVID-19. These are split into three work packages: diagnostic capacity and genomics surveillance; secondary care; and epidemiology and control.
Strategically, we have designed our activities to develop a platform for Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust (MLW) to rapidly pivot into response mode to support the healthcare system and deliver excellent research for current and future epidemic disease threats.
