LAKANA Covid-19 surveillance study

Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) is a potentially severe acute respiratory infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus was identified as the cause of an outbreak of pneumonia of unknown cause in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, in December 2019. The clinical presentation is that of a respiratory infection with a symptom severity ranging from a mild common-cold-like illness to severe viral pneumonia leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome that is potentially fatal. Mali identified its first cases on 25th March 2020. The LAKANA Covid-19 Surveillance Study will use an established research platform in the Kayes and Kita regions of Mali to implement a package of public health interventions to strengthen the health system and establish effective disease surveillance of Covid-19 infection to reduce the spread of the disease.

The LAKANA Covid-19 Surveillance Study is an observational study supporting the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs’ strategy to strengthen epidemiological surveillance and implement a package of public health interventions to reduce the transmission of the disease. The study will be built on a public health intervention, designed to support and enhance the national response in Mali to limit the spread of Covid-19 epidemic at health facilities and in the community and to mitigates its impact the population’s health. 

Research question 1 (impact on health services): indicators of health service delivery will be recorded on a daily basis.

Research question 2 (seroprevalence among health workers): all healthcare workers at selected facilities will be enrolled and followed for the duration of the study.

Research questions 3 (characteristics of Covid-patients) and 4 (infections among household contacts): will be based on a prospective case-ascertained study design in which all household contacts of a laboratory confirmed Covid-19 patient will be tested and followed for up-to 28 days.

Research question 5 (prevalence of current and past infection) will be a population-based survey, conducted separately in rural and urban settings, in which a multi-staged sampling approach will be used.
