GENOMETAD: Genomics of resistant strains of P. falciparum for application in Drug Discovery.

Objectives

The objective of the project is to understand antimalarial drug resistance, a recurring obstacle in the fight against malaria disease. For that, in vivo resistance generation assays and Whole Genome Sequencing of mutated parasites will be combined and integrated using mathematical models. The ultimate goal of this line of research is to design a third-party service that allows predicting whether new drugs will remain effective once used generically in humans and anticipate parasite response to the extensive use of a drug in the field.
