Freedom from Infection Dominican Republic
Objectives
This study aims to apply the existing Freedom from Infection framework to the malaria surveillance system in the Dominican Republic to support the transition towards malaria elimination certification. The objective is to generate evidence for the elimination program, including the strengths and weaknesses of the surveillance system, and also to determine if and how this methodology could be used for decision making and for focusing resources in the context of malaria elimination confirmation.

This is a cross sectional study which will involve the collection of routinely collected malaria data from health facilities (2018 – 2021), and interviews with health facility staff. The FFI surveillance methods allow the quantification of the probability of a surveillance system to be capable of detecting infections, given they are above a detection threshold, and the estimation of the probability of a negative result effectively reflecting the absence of malaria transmission.
