Formative evaluation of rectal artesunate (RAS)

Objectives

The aim of this sub-project is to assess what is and is not working with implementing RAS according to the WHO recommendations, that includes ensuring all children who receive RAS complete their referral for IM artemisinin followed by a full course of oral ACTs.

Principal Institution

PATH, United States

Principal Investigators / Focal Persons

Rationale and Abstract

Given the recent results from the CARMEL studies that showed RAS can be associated with increases in child deaths from severe malaria, mostly due to lack of completing referrals, there is a need to assess what is and is not working with the RAS program currently being implemented in several districts of Zambia.

Study Design

Qualitative study using a combination of in-depth interviews, focus groups, record reviews and a service availability and readiness assessment at various levels of the RAS program, including referral facilities.
