Elucidation of host tissue repair mechanisms in protozoan infections, particularly malaria

Objectives

The objectives of this project are to:

  1. elucidate the role of Plet-1 in protozoan infections using mice lacking the tissue repair-related molecule Placenta-expressed transcript 1 (Plet-1);
  2. clarify the molecular mechanism of tissue repair involving Plet-1 through proteomic and RNAseq analyses; and
  3. verify the effect of activating the tissue repair mechanism on alleviating symptoms of protozoan infections using mice with increased Plet-1 expression.

Rationale and Abstract

This research not only demonstrates the importance of tissue repair mechanisms in protozoan infections, but also presents a new treatment strategy for protozoan infections that targets host factors, alleviating symptoms by activating the tissue repair mechanism.
