Development of a mouse-based vaccine against liver-stage malaria with lifelong immunity

Objectives

The purpose of this study, as basic research for vaccine development, is to identify malaria antigens that are effective against liver-stage malaria parasites by analyzing the immune response of mice that have acquired lifelong immunity.

Rationale and Abstract

The researchers found that mice treated after infection with liver-stage malaria showed strong resistance to subsequent malaria infection. Similarly, mice vaccinated with our original malaria vaccine were exposed to malaria parasites and protected from infection, and were completely resistant to infection even after repeated exposure. Based on these findings, the study hypothesized that it may be possible to confer lifelong immunity against malaria.
