Data science applied to epidemiological and demographic information as a strategy for simulation and surveillance of malaria cases in the Brazilian Amazon

Objectives

The general objective of this project is to develop tools for data visualization and service simulation of the spread of malaria outbreaks based on machine learning methods, using demographic, epidemiological, climatic and clinical data referring to malaria in the Brazilian Amazon.

Specific objectives:

  1. Construction of an integrated database, with data from different domains (demographic, epidemiological, climatic and clinical) combining different data sources made available by the public authorities.
  2. Building a dynamic and interactive data visualization service.
  3. Evaluate the application of machine learning models, using the constructed database, to simulate the expansion/retraction behavior of malaria foci.
  4. Establish the determining factors of notified cases of malaria from the database created.
  5. Implement and make available the services in the form of a tool on a web platform.
  6. Integrate tools from this project to the Web Platform to support health managers.

Rationale and Abstract

A major challenge in the fight against malaria is the sustainability of actions aimed at its control in a context of reduced health expenditures. Malaria occurs almost entirely in the North, where health systems are less adaptable to change. A situation to be faced is also the decrease in the reduction of transmission containment efforts when there is a reduction in the number of cases, which leads in a short time to the resurgence of the disease. It is clear that the elimination of malaria in Brazil is possible, but that to achieve it, a medium and long-term plan with strategies that lead to sustainability is necessary. Among these actions, he highlights the adaptation of vector control measures, with integration and strengthening of the local health system. This requires both technical innovations and political commitment to secure human and financial resources. Currently, there are few resources to carry out surveillance of malaria cases in the Amazon and, generally, they are based on historical data and carried out by highly specialized human resources, making the work costly and often unfeasible due to the fact that it is not possible to infer knowledge in a timely manner. to carry out preventive or even corrective actions. In addition, the actions that could be carried out by public managers are limited by the lack of tools for exploring this data, especially those that are based on information visualization methods, which allow analysis in a dynamic, interactive and even real-time way. It is in this scenario that the present research project is inserted. It is important to point out that several previous studies carried out in the country have explored the issue of malaria transmission in the Brazilian Amazon, both from an epidemiological, biological, vector and geographic perspective. It is necessary to develop new Brazilian approaches and strategies, both from an epidemiological, biological, vector and geographic perspective.
