Containment of artemisinin resistant malaria in hotspots along the Thai-Myanmar border

Objectives

The objectives of this project will be covered through the following activities:

  • Mapping of hotspots of malaria transmission intensity and the hotspots of high migration;
  • Advocacy and social mobilization will be done to community leaders/ community groups via formal and informal meetings and other Behaviour Change Communication methods;
  • Training to health staff/field team, mobile team, community health workers and platoon medics/armed health staff;
  • Existing malaria transmission information will be identified through rapid diagnosis test (RDT positivity rates) and Active Case Detection (ACD) will be performed;
  • Intense (PCR) screening will be performed to detect asymptomatic carriers;
  • Hotspots with a high level of artemisinin resistance will be identified through the analysis of the DNA of falciparum malaria parasites for kelch 13 mutations (a specific marker for artemisinin resistance);
  • Targeted Malaria Elimination (TME) in the hotspot; and
  • All platoon /armed medics and community health workers will be supplied with RDTs, ACT and Dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine plus primaquine.
