Biodefensives extracted from amazonian plants in the control of malaria and dengue vectors
Objectives
*Original title in Portuguese: Biodefensivos extraídos de plantas amazônicas no controle dos vetores da malária e dengue
The biological activities of volatile oils, crude extracts, fractions, and if possible, isolated substances and nanoemulsions of P. tetandra and P. alliacea will be investigated in larvae of A. aegypti and An. darlingi, while the mechanism of action of these natural products will be investigated in the central nervous system of larvae by evaluating the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase in addition to the inhibition or reduction of An. darlingi by P. vivax. Furthermore, the environmental safety of the products obtained from the plants will be investigated in the natural predators, Toxorhynchites haemorrhoidalis, Anisops bouvieri, Poecilia reticulada and Diplonychus indicus.
Dengue and malaria are diseases spread by Aedes aegypti and Anopheles darlingi mosquitoes to more than 100 countries, causing outbreaks, epidemics and deaths annually. For decades, the use of synthetic insecticides promoted the development of resistance, in addition to the contamination of fauna and flora, making the control of these mosquitoes a significant public health problem. Thus, the substances extracted from the species Petiveria tetandra and Petiveria alliacea can be characterized as important agents in the control of A. aegypti and An. darlingi, in addition to promising activity in inhibiting An. darlingi by Plasmodium vivax.
