Asymptomatic Plasmodium falciparum infections as obstacle to malaria elimination: A case study from The Gambia
Objectives
1.To determine the extent of asymptomatic P. falciparum carriage across transmission seasons, associated risk factors and the relationship between carriage and clinical malaria in a reduced transmission setting of The Gambia.
2.To establish the capacity to investigate the infectious reservoir of asymptomatic P. falciparum malaria in The Gambia by validating direct membrane feeding assay (DMFA).
3.To determine the proportional contribution of sub-patent asymptomatic P. falciparum infections to malaria transmission in a reduced transmission setting of The Gambia.
4.To determine the effect of seasonal malaria chemoprevention with Sulphadoxine Pyremethamine (SP) and Amodiaquine (AQ) on gametocyte carriage in children with asymptomatic P. falciparum infections.
