Artemisinin Market Dynamics
Objectives
The main objective of this project is to improve transparency and confidence in the market for semi-synthetic arteminisin (SSA) as an alternative to agriculturally derived (vegetal) artemisinin and to evaluate potential approaches for reducing the production cost for SSA.
Rationale and Abstract
Relatively high semi-synthetic arteminisin (SSA) prices coupled with a lack of transparency in the supply, demand, and pricing of SSA have hindered uptake despite SSA’s value as insurance for broader artemisinin supply. While driving the uptake of existing SSA will reduce total reliance on vegetal artemisinin, more competition within the SSA market itself is needed to put downward pressure on production costs and therefore bring prices closer to those of vegetal artemisinin.
