Elucidating the biosynthesis of Tabernaemontana catharinensis alkaloids

*Original title in Portuguese: Elucidando a biossíntese dos alcalóides de Tabernaemontana catharinensis
The project aims to study the biochemical processes – biosynthesis – used by plants to synthesize indole monoterpene alkaloids.

Rationale and Abstract
These compounds comprise compounds such as strychnine (a poison), quinine (anti-malaria), camptothecin (anti-cancer) and vinblastine (anti-cancer). In order to explore other similar molecules, it is necessary to develop robust methods for large-scale production. Furthermore, it would be valuable to have methods to modify the structures of these compounds so that we can test additional derivatives and obtain improved biological activity.
