4D reconstruction of de novo cristae formation in malaria parasite mitochondria
Objectives
In this project the investigators will employ cutting-edge live-and electron microscopy to provide an unparalleled 4D-reconstruction of cristae formation in malaria parasite mitochondria. By combining these insights with data on protein complexes, they will shed light on this validated antimalarial drug-target and on basic principles of cristae formation.

Rationale and Abstract
The inner membrane of mitochondria, the powerhouses of the cell, is characterized by invaginations, termed cristae. Malaria parasites harbour a single, unusual mitochondrion that lacks cristae during the pathogenic blood-infection. After formation of sexual-stage parasites, required for transmission to the mosquito vector, mitochondrial functioning changes dramatically and cristae are formed from scratch.
