Project for the sustainable control of zoonotic malaria through an integrated approach
Objectives
The overall aim of this research is to develop technologies and strategies that will drastically reduce the number of zoonotic malaria cases in Sabah, Malaysia.
In Malaysia, approximately 3,000 people are infected with zoonotic malaria each year, which has become a significant issue. Although there have been no reports of human-to-human transmission at present, if such transmission were to occur, it could spread globally, making its prevention an urgent task. Specifically, this includes the development of a novel rapid malaria diagnostic method, an automated control method for mosquito larvae, the identification of high-risk areas, times, and human behaviors, the creation and social implementation of a risk education program, and the construction of a One Health strategy for zoonotic malaria control that integrates these efforts. Through these efforts, the aim is to reduce the public health burden and economic losses in Malaysia and prevent the spread of human-to-human transmission.
