Development of second generation passive emanators to reduce mosquito biting behavior (SEGEPE)
Objectives
This study aims to create two new passive emanator prototypes incorporating novel active ingredients or combinations thereof for protection against mosquito vectors, particularly in remote locations with challenging access to care, where the burden of mosquito-borne disease is often the highest.
The specific objectives are:
- To conduct detailed entomological assessments of eleven pre-identified volatile chemical compounds and essential oils to be studied alone and in combination as a resistance management strategy
- To develop two optimized lightweight and portable prototypes that provide at least 4 weeks of protection suitable for use by deployed warfighters

Spatial repellents are designed to prevent contact between humans and mosquitoes by working at a distance. Currently, pyrethroid-based insecticides like transfluthrin and metofluthrin are being used. The resulting prototype if this project is sought to be efficacious for at least 4 weeks, portable, lightweight, and have little to no odor. Under a subcontract, the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) will conduct pre-testing and dose response testing on the active ingredients and combinations thereof. IHI will conduct analysis of protective efficacy and potential to reduce vectorial capacity, for later use in prototype development. This will be a fixed-price subcontract; the IHI was selected for this subcontract due to their leadership with conducting vector control testing on active compounds, formulations, and products in semi-field and field settings.
