AI-enabled Citizen Surveillance for Invasive and Vector Mosquitoes

Vector surveillance is a very important strategy in the fight against malaria.

Preliminary findings on a surveillance tool which utilizes global citizen observations was presented during a workshop on “Strengthening the role of citizen science and digital entomology in mosquito-borne disease surveillance in Europe” (ref). This research aims to develop free artificial intelligence (AI) tools useful for the surveillance and control of invasive vector mosquitoes for use by citizen scientists and mosquito control personnel.

Presentation topics:

  • Artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Citizen science campaign
  • Anopheles stephensi
  • Mosquito Habitat Mapper
  • AI model: species ID
  • Deployment: AI dashboard
  • Deployment: GIS dashboard
  • Other tools / smart trap
  • Conclusion

About

The creation of this AI tool is funded by a four-year grant provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF), USA. The research team is led by Ryan Carney (University of South Florida).
