Entomoecological characterization of the landscape as a surveillance strategy for arboviral and malaria vector mosquitoes in the Environmental Protection Area of Sana, Macaé, Rio de Janeiro

The research project proposed here adopts a combined approach between medical entomology and landscape ecology, in an entomological and landscape characterization study of the Environmental Protection Area of Sana (APA do Sana). This Conservation Unit for the Sustainable Use of Environmental Resources (UC), located in the municipality of Macaé, state of Rio de Janeiro, is much visited by countless Brazilian and foreign tourists and presents indigenous cases of malaria and yellow fever. An entomological survey will be carried out at focal points (10m radius) of interest located along an urban/periurban-rural-wildlife gradient. Entomological surveys will be carried out in three periods (summer-winter-summer) and data on immature forms of Culicidae will be collected. Local variables (radius of 10m) and the surrounding landscape at multiple scales (radius of 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1000m) will be computed. Through an Akaike Information Criterion (AICc) model selection approach, generalized linear models (GLMs) will be used to assess which factors best explain the distribution, richness and species composition of mosquitoes. Additionally, the present study will be developed with a view to fostering the creation and supporting the implementation of a special pole for the surveillance of wild vectors as a strategy for active surveillance of arboviruses and malaria in an environmental protection area in Rio de Janeiro.
