Synthesis of Nitrogen heterocycles and anti-plasmodial potential evaluation

Malaria is an infectious disease endemic in tropical and subtropical regions of the planet, with alarming morbidity and mortality rates, caused by parasites of the genus plasmodia. The treatment of this disease requires the use of chemotherapy, fundamental for malaria control. Literature points out the rapid emergence of resistance to previously existing medication, cross-resistance and dependence on a limited number of antimalarials. In order to identify new substances with antimalarial potential, the present work proposes the production of a chemotherapy, partly consisting of compounds structurally based on 3-alkylpyridines, which in previous work by the research group, were identified as anti-plasmodial and whose cytotoxic mechanism it was related to the interference of heme group polymerization in hemozoin. The compounds obtained will be evaluated later as to their potential interaction with the heme group, by spectroscopic titration assay, and as to the antiplasmodial activity against Plasmodium falciparum.
