Senegal Care-seeking Behavior Study
Objectives
The primary objective is to evaluate care-seeking and the management of febrile diseases, particularly with regard to the management of malaria cases in the health districts of Yeumbeul, Touba, Richard Toll and Tambacounda.
The secondary objectives are the following:
- To characterize care-seeking behavior for fever;
- To identify the barriers or factors that promote early access to care for febrile illnesses in different contexts (public and private sector health facilities, community level, referral hospital, district health center, health posts, urban and rural areas) in the targeted districts;
- To assess health care providers’ adherence to national guidelines for malaria diagnosis and treatment.

As Senegal transitions from malaria control to elimination, a better understanding of the determinants of health care utilization and quality of malaria case management is needed to strengthen overall quality of care and further the country’s efforts toward elimination. Given limited data available on care-seeking and quality of management of febrile illnesses in Senegal, this study seeks to identify potential barriers in the management of febrile illnesses that may influence care-seeking behaviors; identification of these barriers will ultimately help identify and strengthen community and/or health system interventions. The results of this study will be used to improve interventions aimed at ensuring equitable access to and demand for (1) rapid diagnosis and treatment and (2) effective and quality management of febrile illnesses.
The study will use a mixed-methods approach. Data collection will be organized around three components: a quantitative/qualitative assessment at the health facility level, a qualitative/quantitative survey of community health workers (CHWs), and a survey involving the community.
