Function of Anopheles mosquito Y Chromosome Genes
Objectives
- To test the effect of GUY1 expression or the lack of GUY1 expression on sexual development in Anopheles stephensi.
- To uncover Y chromosome genes from Anopheles gambiae, the African malaria mosquito, to infer evolution of the Anopheles Y chromosome.

Rationale and Abstract
Anopheles mosquitoes are the primary vectors of malaria, which is one of the most deadly and costly infectious diseases in human history. Y chromosome is known to be involved in sex determination, spermatogenesis, and sexual behavior in different species. Specifically, we will use transgenic methods to investigate the function of a Y chromosome gene we discovered and named GUY1 in Anopheles stephensi, the Asian malaria mosquito.
The long term objective of this study is to develop novel strategies to control mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases based on a better understanding of Anopheles Y chromosome genes.
