Assessment of larviciding efficacy for integrated vector control in the city of Yaoundé, Cameroon

Although over 60% of the population in Cameroon own Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINs), vector control efforts across the country are hindered by the rapid expansion of pyrethroid resistance in vector populations. The situation is particularly concerning in urban settings (52% of the population) where mosquito are adapting to polluted sites and where unplanned urbanisation and the practice of urban agriculture provide breeding habitats for mosquitoes.To achieve the long term goal of malaria elimination in Africa, it is important to maintain the efficacy of existing control tools and to develop additional strategies for vector control. Larval control could be an important asset particularly in urban settings where breeding sites are few, fixed and findable. 

Mosquito species targeted and larviciding used: An. gambiae s.l. / VectomaxTM combining both Bacillus thurigiensis israelensis and Bacillus sphaericus

Main outcome: densites of mosquitoes collected in houses using CDC light traps
Secondary outcomes: the entomological inoculation rate (EIR), the infection rate, the proportion of breeding sites with anopheline larvae, the proportion of breeding sites with late instar larvae
