Evidence and action for malaria elimination in Myanmar
Objectives
- Evidence: To collect baseline data to support elimination and to gather buy‐in from country leadership and local malaria communities
- Action: Targeted Mass Treatment (TMT) of malaria
The specific objectives are:
- To identify reservoirs of sub-patent asymptomatic P. falciparum parasitemia in Myanmar using ultra-sensitive qPCR to provide ‘real-time intelligence’ to guide the development of elimination strategies
- To test and implement targeted malaria elimination pilot (longitudinal) evaluations at selected sites within Myanmar, based on surveillance data.
- To develop sustained political will and community participation for malaria elimination, using scientific research and meaningful collaborative work as a catalyst to bring together people from different political, social and scientific backgrounds. The intervention for pilot evaluation of malaria elimination that is currently under investigation is population treatment of malaria using DHA-pip with low dose primaquine.

The overall objective of this project is to raise awareness and support in Myanmar for scaling Targeted Parasite Elimination (TPE) via diplomatic effort in the civilian and military sectors and pilot scale evidence development required by local stakeholders to eventually go to scale.
Collaborators include Myanmar governmental (civilian and military) and non-governmental (private and public professional) institutions working toward malaria control and elimination in Myanmar.
The reduced cost and complexity of ultrasensitive polymerase chain reaction (usPCR) will allow for the scale-up of surveillance studies to target MDA and other malaria elimination interventions, and help lead to a better understanding of the epidemiology of low-density malaria infections.
