Research into predicting genetic factors that confer high levels of resistance to artemisinin in malaria parasites

Objectives

The purpose of this study is to construct an experimental system that can isolate drug-resistant malaria that occurs in malaria endemic areas with high reproducibility.

Principal Institution

Juntendo University, Japan

Principal Investigators / Focal Persons

Rationale and Abstract

To accomplish the purpose of this study, the evolutionary rate of malaria parasites from endemic areas will be accelerated, and resistant parasites will then be isolated by exposing them to drugs. The genetic changes in the isolated resistant parasites will be analyzed, and it will be verified whether these changes have also occurred in malaria parasites from endemic areas. Through these experiments, the study aims to predict drug-resistant malaria parasites that may emerge in endemic areas in the future and to provide useful information for drug development focusing on resistance mechanisms.
