Epigenetic studies of Schistosoma mansoni and Plasmodium
Objectives

This project aims to investigate the main post-translational modifications of histones and whether these marks are dynamically acquired and lost between stages and forms of both parasites, as well as the probable transcriptional co-regulators that participate in the regulation of gene expression.
Major epigenetic modifications include DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNA. The comparison and investigation of the epigenetics of hosts and parasites, mainly the post-translational modifications of histones, will indicate the important role of these genetic modifications in the development, reproduction and proliferation of the parasites. Epigenetics and quantitative proteomics methodologies are the main current tools for understanding the gene expression of parasites such as the protozoan Plasmodium and the helminth Schistosoma mansoni.
